Spooky Story Bonfire

For many kids, Halloween is easily their favorite holiday. They get to dress up, carve pumpkins, and go trick-or-treating. While our interests tend to shift towards things like haunted houses and horror movies as we get older, college students still love Halloween. Many organizations on campus cater to this with events like the ghost tours and Spooky Camp4. On October 29th, Impressions celebrated Halloween with one of its oldest traditions—scary stories.

We met at the McArthur Pavilion with hot chocolate, cider, candy, and s’mores, and students got to share their favorite spooky stories. While we sat around the fire, people talked about their personal experiences with ghosts, read sections of creepy novels, and shared frightening family histories. Some students were even able to provide pictures to go along with their stories. Coleman Bomar, a member of the Impressions staff, talked about a family curse linked back to the famous Bell Witch and showed a picture of a wreath made from her hair. Bailee Burleson shared a Snapchat taken at the House in the Woods with MC’s own Woman in White visible in the background.

Some students came dressed as literary characters, authors, and professors such as Samwise Gamgee, Flannery O’Conner, and Dr. Phillips. Between stories, there was a contest to see who could guess the most costumes correctly. In the spirit of Halloween, the winner went home with a bag of Reese’s.
